The best parks in Doncaster

Those living in Doncaster will already know what a beautiful and cultured area of the UK it is. Doncaster has an abundance of outdoor spaces, parks, and reserves to enjoy.

The first park on our list is located less than five minutes from our stunning range of new homes at Furlong Park, Doncaster, and offers a range of activities for the whole family to enjoy. Sandall Park is home to a beautiful lake, where locals often fish, an adventure playground for children and often hosts family fun days with rides and games for all ages. This is a fantastic park for the local community in Doncaster.

The next historical local park within Doncaster is Castle Hills Park. One of the main attractions to this park is the ancient motte and bailey castle, the motte is a man-made hill or mound with a ‘keep’ similar to a castle or a tower which is then surrounded by a bailey - similar to a wall or barrier to protect the keep. They were fantastic for protection as they gave more visibility to enemies and made it difficult to approach due to the steep hill. 

Moving onto Quarry Park which is also a local nature reserve has had its fair share of local history over the years. Originally this park was used for agriculture until 1938 when it was used for nearly two decades as a quarry. You can notice the peaks and troughs throughout. The local council has put on several fitness walks and trails around the award-winning park for visitors which can be found on their websites.

Melton Wood Country Park is a beautiful, wooded park with a huge amount of space to cycle through. During the war, the oak and ash timber was sold to make money and local prisoners were used to cut down the trees which dramatically changed the original look of the woodland area. Many new houses were built in the local area following the war. 

Howell Wood Country Park is a great wooded park to visit for families as it has several activities to do here. The woods were originally used as a game reserve with the surrounding grounds used for crops. The fishing lake was used during the winter months for food and ice, the ice was stored in the ice-house which now houses many insects, bugs, and mammals. 

Denaby Memorial Park, fondly known as the Flower Park is ideal for families living in Doncaster homes with facilities to entertain all ages. You could spend the morning looking around the historical monument honouring late war heroes before spending some time burning energy off with their outdoor gym equipment. There are also play areas that toddlers through to teenagers can enjoy! The local council has incorporated a walking route to encourage locals to exercise whilst enjoying the beautiful scenery within the park.

Askern Boating Lake is a great place for budding fishers due to there being no fee to fish here as long as you have your rod licence, they allow fishing from dawn to dusk. There is also a lovely little café where you can enjoy a hot drink and some food whilst waiting for your fish to bite! The view from the café is very tranquil, looking over the lake.

Another park a short drive from Scawthorpe great for water lovers is Bentley Park, the only park in the area with a water play area! The pavilion is still home to many community events, celebrations, and is a gathering point for many people. The Pit Stop Café is a great little spot for snacks and drinks whilst enjoying the beautiful grounds, sporting events such as a bowls game, or watching the skate park and contemplating whether you could do any of those tricks! 

Grove Gardens is a popular park for older children and teenagers due to the sheltered covering to sit under, tennis courts, and sports pitches to enjoy. This park is great for picnics with many benches dotted throughout the park and gorgeous flower beds make for a relaxing lunch break spot. With baby and toddler-friendly park areas, it’s a perfect place to go as a family especially if you’ve recently moved into one of the new build homes in Doncaster.

For the sporty individuals, Adwick Park would be ideal for you to visit, with football pitches, cricket pitches and a bowls green makes it a suitable place for all ages. There are playing fields to run around playing games or to enjoy walks around. The local football team Adwick Park Rangers has their junior team which you can support.
